There are many reasons to keep an eye on your competitors. Even before you start your own business you should carry out some market research to get a good idea of who your competitors are, how they operate and what threat they pose. Many businesses have fallen prey to competitors who have been more aggressive, forward-thinking or simply just more intelligent with their marketing.
In the first sensitive days, weeks and months of running your business when you’re especially vulnerable, you don’t want to risk falling behind and being forced into liquidation or bankruptcy by a superior competitor simply because you weren’t paying enough attention.
Examining the Competition
Hopefully your research will help you learn who your competitors are. Then you need to consider how they operate their business. The idea is to learn what they do so you can spot weakness in their strategies, strengths in their marketing and gaps in the market. With a little bit of analysis you can learn what they are doing right and perhaps go one step further. Avoid mistakes they have made as well, to better your own business.
Bear in mind, while you are examining the competition it is a good idea to get the opinions of others as well. Ask your potential customers what they think of your competitors. What do they think your competitor is doing right or wrong? Just because you think something is a bad idea doesn’t mean your target market will.
Don’t Flatter – Better
Imitation might be the greatest form of flattery, but directly copying your competition is not the key to a successful business. In order to succeed, you need to do better than your competitor. On the other hand, you don’t want to go into business without a plan or you risk missing out on a wealth of potential profit.
If you have multiple competitors, you could take the best elements of each of their businesses and improve on them, but what makes a truly great business is adding your personal touch. Make your business shine, but putting your own passion into it and you will stand out from your competitors. Offer something totally different and you could get the edge.
Spotting The Gap
If you take your business in a different direction you could easily outshine your competitors. Taking the video games market as an example, Nintendo had been around for years but recently began to struggle against the technology giants Microsoft and Sony and their game console offerings. Recognising the threat, Nintendo took a completely different direction with their business. Rather than appealing to the usual “video gamer” market, the introduced the Wii and aimed it squarely at “non-gamers” – mums, dads, grandmothers and grandfathers. Putting a new slant on gaming with introduction of “healthy” gaming like Wii Fit, meant that they were reaching an entirely new market untouched and unnoticed by Sony and Microsoft. As we all know, the Wii has been a raving success and Nintendo have made the most of their endeavours.
Spotting the gap in the market in this way is an excellent way to get the edge in business. But it doesn’t even have to be that drastic. Apple has always had the edge with their products aimed at quality and user-experience in an entirely different way to other businesses. You might pay more for an iPhone, iPod or iPad than the other alternatives, but you can be sure you’re getting a quality product with a user-friendly interface. Apples pull has people queuing down the street for their new products on release day and this is a testament to the fact that being different is better. Price isn’t always a winning factor, being the cheapest isn’t necessarily the best.
Discovering Online Secrets
