There are many myths about getting started in business. One of which is the need for a great idea. A great idea is good, obviously, and if you have one which no one else has thought of then you are likely to get ahead, but there are plenty of businesses out there (and thousands of new ones starting each year) that don’t have a special idea. Think about all the newsagents, pizza places, barber shops and driving schools that you see around. Do any of them have a great idea that stands out from the crowd? Sure, they might do something slightly different, but it’s unlikely that they have an idea which is wholly unique to their industry. Yet many of these businesses manage to survive and succeed.
There are many essential elements to starting a good business, but having a great idea is not necessarily one of them. You just need to be prepared to put in the hard work, make the right decisions and get the word out about your business to get the people coming in to spend their money.
Great Business Ideas – Who Needs Them?
There are some, not-so-great business ideas that you could try to avoid which might put your business further ahead than another business owner who does have a great unique business idea. Similarly there are some important business concepts it’s important not to ignore.
- Location, location, location – everyone knows this old phrase. So much so that you’re probably sick of hearing it now. But it is an essential element of business success. Starting up a pizza place next door to another one is not a great business idea. However, some clever planning when it comes to business location might give you an edge over the competition. Just down the road from our office a wedding shop has just opened up right next door to a sex shop. Great idea or not?
- Business name – what’s in a name? Everything and nothing. A businesses name will either stick in a customer’s mind or be quickly forgotten. It might be used in vein or highly praised, as word about your business is passed from mouth to ear. In choosing a business name you need to pick something memorable, descriptive and appropriate. “Green Monkey Solutions” might be a good name, but what does the company do? A good name a well designed company logo could mean all the difference to a new business, being easily remembered and spread to friends and family.
- Failing to plan – in our last article on business myths, I discussed not needing a business plan. Failing to properly plan could mean the death of a business before it has even started. A well thought out business plan will be a useful tool in the future for monitoring the success of the business and keeping it on track.
- Knowing your customers – it’s a simple business idea, but marketing and selling to the right people is an essential part of any business. If you don’t know who your customers are, how can you hope to sell to them? You might be using the wrong language or tone in your advertising or trying to sell high quality products to people looking for something cheap. Business is all about fulfilling a need. If you know your customers and what they need, then you can provide the product or service to fill that need. Keep them happy and they’ll be coming back for more.
