According to current research, the consumer market for so called “M-Commerce” is on the rise. More and more people are shopping online using their mobile phones. Online auction giant eBay has apparently had around £123million worth of goods sold through their site via mobile phones in the last year alone.
With the rise in the number of smart phones and available apps (applications) being created for them this phenomenon is less surprising. More often than not online e-commerce websites have a “mobile” friendly version of their site which automatically detects when a user is viewing via a mobile phone and switches to a more compatible version suitable for their browser. Websites that are not designed as mobile friendly are likely to be left behind or at least suffer from loss of potential sales.
A handful of interesting eBay related m-commerce facts:
- More than 10 million people globally use their iPhones to shop using eBay;
- eBay has custom applications for a broad range of mobile platforms: iPhone, iPad, Android, Blackberry and WAP for any web-enable phone;
- Smart phone adoption in UK rose 70 per cent to 11.2m users during 2009, making the UK the leading European market for Smartphone users.
